Hi guys, in the video you asked how mipmaps are affecting the game and what they are. I'm a game developer I can bring a bit of light to this topic. What mipmaps are is basically versions of the full texture of a model with reduced size by a factor of 2, this means a texture of a tree's leaves that originally has 1024x1024 pixels for the game engine has multiple versions of this texture in memory, the full size one, half-size (512x512), quarter size (256x256) and so on until you eventually reach 8x8, 4x4, 2x2.Game engines use this feature so things that you see at far are rendered with the reduced size version of the texture instead of the full size version, this helps with performance, for example a tree that you see in the game maybe 600 meters away, only occupies one or two pixels of your screen, why expending gpu time rendering a 1024x1024 texture for that tree, when a 2x2 texture version will work just fine. The same thing happens but depending on the angle you see a texture, so when you look at a wall from very close you can notice that for instance a brick texture gets progressively reduced in quality over the distance, that happens because mipmaps, when you see something like a wall at a very perpendicular angle, that thing only occupies a few pixels in wideness in your screen, so it gets render with the low-res versions of the full texture. What you did with the UGO mod is to enable an engine feature made originally for optimization, and you forced it to use the worst mipmap version at all times, no matter the distance, so everything is being rendered with the 2x2 pixels version of their original textures, now you see everything flat and you can see the actual polygons of tree leaf etc.

Why'd you bother censoring the nipples if you showed em anyways lmao

  • Dreschler

This is what us devs see during the development process. The trees and characters look weird like that because of the retopology, which is done so you can have a beautiful looking world without compromising your beloved ram. No game run with those beautiful and textured Zbrush sculpted characters you find on ArtStation and stuff... oh, and you are seeing how the game looks without texture, with only the local material. meh

  • Musik Mage

    No vesemir sht at 7:00 ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)

From a Dev: Only going to explain some. Many are a bit self explanatory. The first option they turned down is Mip Map Density. This takes a set of pixels and blends them together. This allows far away textures to take all their component pixels and just focus on the color that most represents all averaged present colors. So all of the colors of Geralt's shirt mixed together most closely resemble purple. The leaves on the trees seem to turn to quads (squares) are actually always quads. Quads are four sided polygons much easier to render than making a full leaf mesh. We mark certain areas as transparent and the non-transparent sections are made to look like a visible leaf. When we blend mip maps together on the leaf. Transparent mixes with green to make the whole leaf quad colored one color.Terrain read ahead distance measures the distance away from the player to load in objects. Just measuring distance and enabling anything entering that threshold. They appear in groups because it is more efficient to asses 10-20 trees at a time than each on individually. This is often called static batching. We know the trees aren't ever going to move, so in rendering terms, we consider them one static object representing a "batch" of a few objects.

  • Rene Descartes

The looks of the graphics remind me of The Legend of Zelda - The Wind Waker
